Checkerboard areas indicate transparency. Previews fit the screen; downloads keep the displayed pixel dimensions.

Downloads re-encode pixels and remove source metadata. JPEG fills transparent areas with the selected background.

Understand the task

PNG compression and color reduction are different operations. Full-color encoding retains decoded pixel values. A palette replaces colors with a smaller set and may visibly alter gradients, shadows or translucent edges. Fewer colors do not guarantee a smaller file for every image.

What this tool does

Optimize a static PNG with full-color encoding or a reduced color palette, and compare the actual file size.

How to use

  1. Choose image
  2. Choose a static PNG, select full color or a palette size of 2–256 colors, and create a preview. Compare the result to the original before downloading.
  3. Downloads re-encode pixels and remove source metadata. JPEG fills transparent areas with the selected background.

Limits and common errors

PNG input only. Maximum 6 million pixels. Palette mode is lossy. Full color preserves decoded pixels rather than metadata. Already optimized PNGs may grow; the signed size change shows this.

Questions and answers

Which color count should I choose?

Start at 256 for icons and screenshots, then inspect thin lines and transparent edges. Use full color when exact decoded colors matter. Photos and gradients may look better with full color or a lossy WebP conversion.
